Solution Outdoor LoRaWAN Local ITS Edge
Outdoor asset tracking system using LoRaWAN
Battery-powered trackers determine asset positions using GNSS and transmit data over LoRaWAN. In the local deployment, positions, events and history remain in ITS Edge Cabinet without a mandatory connection to a public cloud.
Why this solution
Four reasons to choose this solution
01
GNSS position and Wi‑Fi scanning
AT101 uses GNSS and, in areas with a weaker signal, can report the identifiers and signal strength of nearby Wi‑Fi access points for additional positioning.
02
Multi-year battery life
The declared battery life depends on the reporting frequency: from more than 15 years with two updates per day to more than 4 years with hourly updates.
03
Position, events and history
The dashboard can combine the latest position, route, motion status, tilt, temperature, tamper and geofencing events. The history scope is defined for the project.
04
Local data processing
GNSS data, the LoRaWAN Network Server and the dashboard can operate in local ITS Edge. Mapping services or positioning based on Wi‑Fi scans are selected separately.
Solution components
What the solution includes
-
LoRaWAN outdoor asset trackerView in the store →
A battery-powered AT101 with GNSS, Wi‑Fi access-point scanning, an accelerometer, temperature measurement and a tamper button. Its IP67 and IK09 enclosure is designed for outdoor operation.
-
LoRaWAN gateways
Gateways receive tracker transmissions and forward them to the local LoRaWAN Network Server. Their number and placement are selected after analysing coverage across the site.
-
ITS Edge Cabinet — base versionView model →
A prefabricated cabinet with a local ITS instance, LoRaWAN server, database and Grafana dashboard. It can process data on the customer’s premises without public internet access.
The number of LoRaWAN gateways is selected for the site area, terrain and built environment. The positioning frequency must be balanced against the required route detail and battery life.
Important: AT101 does not connect to Wi‑Fi access points — it reports BSSID and RSSI values. The method of using these scans for positioning and the map source are defined for each deployment. Discover ITS capabilities →
How it works
How it works
GNSS position, optional Wi‑Fi scanning and LoRaWAN transmission.
Reception of data from trackers distributed across the entire area.
Local LNS, database, rules and dashboard.
Trackers mounted on containers, machines, carts or other equipment periodically determine their position using GNSS. They can also scan nearby Wi‑Fi access points and report their BSSID and RSSI values. A packet containing the position and device status is transmitted wirelessly over LoRaWAN.
Gateways forward data over an IP network to ITS Edge Cabinet. The local LoRaWAN server decodes messages, while ITS stores positions and events and presents them in a dashboard. The deployment can operate without public internet access; remote access, external maps and positioning based on Wi‑Fi scans are configured for each project.
Applications
Where it works best
Construction sites
Locating equipment, containers and tools distributed throughout a construction site.
Storage yards and outdoor warehouses
Current visibility of asset locations without manual site inventory.
Equipment rental companies
Tracking the location of rented equipment throughout its use.
Ports and transshipment terminals
Locating containers and cargo units across a large operational area.
Agriculture
Monitoring the location of agricultural machinery across large open areas.
Mining sites
Locating vehicles and equipment in areas with limited mobile network coverage.
Comparison
No more manual asset searches
Without tracking
- Manual searching and inventorying of assets across the site
- No movement history
- Dependence on mobile network coverage for tracking
- Loss or theft without a trace
- Employee time lost determining asset locations
This solution
- Latest asset positions in one dashboard
- Route history according to the selected data-retention policy
- Local ITS deployment independent of mobile network coverage
- Motion, geofencing, tilt and tamper events according to the configuration
- Multi-year battery life with a suitable reporting frequency
Integration and onward data flow
ITS is the starting point, not the endpoint
Positions, routes, statuses and events can remain in the local ITS dashboard or feed the organisation’s operational, reporting and analytical systems.
A shared model for positions, routes, events and tracker statuses.
The interface and update frequency are selected for the receiving system.
Location data can support operational processes and reporting.
The diagram shows example ITS platform integration paths. The specific protocol, data scope and exchange frequency are defined separately for each deployment.
Access to dashboards and configuration can be granted according to the user role.
Deployments requiring remote access can use the built-in VPN server.
Data can remain in local ITS Edge or be replicated and consolidated centrally in ITS Cloud.
Describe the site and assets to be monitored.
For an initial discussion, the approximate number of assets, operating area and information about whether the data should remain local or be available centrally are sufficient.
