Smoke, e-cigarette vapour and volatile organic compound (TVOC) detection
GS601 sensors detect events associated with e-cigarettes and smoke while measuring TVOC, particulate matter, temperature and humidity. Alarms and event history are transmitted over LoRaWAN to a local ITS Edge Cabinet or centrally to ITS Cloud.
Four reasons to choose this solution
Early event notification
When configured thresholds are exceeded, the device signals an alarm locally and transmits the event over LoRaWAN.
Multiple parameters at one point
GS601 combines e-cigarette and smoke detection with TVOC, PM1.0/2.5/10, temperature and humidity measurements.
No cameras or microphones
Monitoring is based on air parameters and sensor events, making it suitable for rooms where privacy is required.
Local or central
Data can remain in ITS Edge Cabinet or be collected from multiple locations in one shared ITS Cloud instance.
What the solution includes
-
Milesight GS601 LoRaWAN sensorView in the store →
A ceiling-mounted vape and smoke event detector that measures TVOC, PM1.0/2.5/10, temperature and humidity. The device requires a permanent 5 V / 1 A power supply via USB-C.
-
LoRaWAN gateway or gateways
They receive alarms, measurements and statuses from sensors within range and forward them to a local or central ITS instance.
-
ITS Edge Cabinet — base version (model 1)View model →
A local ITS instance for storing events, measurement history, dashboards and notifications within the facility, including operation without public internet access.
-
ITS Cloud (model 2)Discover ITS →
A dedicated online instance that consolidates alarms and data from multiple buildings or locations in one environment.
The number of sensors and gateways is selected after analysing the rooms, ventilation, potential interference sources, radio range and available power supply locations.
How it works — two deployment models
Sensors and gateways operate in the same way in both models. Only the ITS platform location and the method of accessing alarms and history change.
Sensors transmit alarms, measurements and statuses over LoRaWAN to a gateway installed at the facility. The gateway forwards them over Ethernet to the base version of ITS Edge Cabinet. The dashboard, event history and notification configuration are available locally, and the system can operate without public internet access.
The gateway forwards alarms and measurements to ITS Cloud over an available IP connection, such as LTE or Ethernet, depending on the selected device and infrastructure. Events from multiple buildings are delivered to one platform instance, providing the administrator with a shared dashboard.
| Location | Event | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Changing room A | E-cigarette vapour | 2 min ago |
| Restroom P2 | Vibration (tampering) | 41 min ago |
| Corridor A | Elevated TVOC | 2 h 10 min ago |

Where it works best
Schools and boarding facilities
Monitoring restrooms, changing rooms, corridors and other places where cameras cannot be used.
Universities and campuses
A shared view of events from multiple buildings with identification of the specific sensor and zone.
Offices and workplaces
Support for enforcing rules in smoke-free areas.
Hotels and accommodation facilities
Recording events in rooms, corridors and common areas without capturing images.
Government offices and public facilities
Central monitoring of distributed rooms and rapid staff notification.
Stations and transport facilities
Event and air-quality detection in restrooms, waiting areas and service zones.
A data-driven alarm instead of an incidental report
- Information only after someone notices an odour or smoke
- No indication of the time or exact event location
- Room inspections without knowing where to respond
- No history for identifying recurring locations
- Difficult comparison across multiple buildings and locations
- Automatic events with a sensor identifier
- Vape index, TVOC, PM and microclimate values in one view
- Notification when configured thresholds are exceeded
- Event history available in ITS
- Local or central platform deployment model
ITS is the starting point, not the endpoint
Alarms, air-quality measurements and device statuses can remain in the ITS dashboard or, depending on the deployment scope, be forwarded to reporting systems, databases and tools already used by the organisation.
The diagram shows available ITS platform integration paths. The specific protocol, data scope and exchange frequency are defined separately for each deployment.
Access to dashboards and configuration can be granted according to the user role.
Deployments requiring remote connectivity can use the built-in VPN server.
Alarms and measurements can remain in Edge Cabinet or be consolidated from multiple facilities in ITS Cloud.
Describe the facility and areas requiring monitoring.
For an initial discussion, the approximate number of rooms, information about USB-C power availability and the expected notification method are sufficient.
