Temperature and humidity monitoring in ATEX hazardous areas
Daviteq WSLRWEX-ATH sensors measure temperature and humidity in classified gas and dust hazardous areas. Measurements and threshold events are transmitted over LoRaWAN to a local ITS Edge Cabinet.
Four reasons to choose this solution
Measurements without signal cabling
Battery-powered measurement points communicate over LoRaWAN, reducing modifications to the facility’s existing installation.
Device for Ex environments
WSLRWEX-ATH features Ex d protection, an IP66 enclosure and markings intended for gas zones 1/2 and dust zones 21/22.
Thresholds and history in ITS
The dashboard combines current values, trends, threshold events and the communication status of all points.
Local data and alarms
ITS Edge Cabinet provides local access to current values, history, trends and alarm rules for temperature and humidity.
What the solution includes
-
Daviteq WSLRWEX-ATH LoRaWAN sensorView in the store →
A battery-powered temperature and humidity sensor with LoRaWAN Class A communication and an IP66 enclosure. The manufacturer specifies ATEX markings II 2G Ex db IIC T5/T6 Gb and II 2D Ex tb IIIC T100/T85°C Db.
-
ITS Edge Cabinet — base versionView cabinet →
A local ITS instance for storing events, measurement history, dashboards and alarm rules at the facility, including operation without public internet access.
-
LoRaWAN gateways (2 units)
Installed outside the hazardous area unless the selected gateways have their own Ex approval. They provide coverage across a larger area and reception redundancy, forwarding data over Ethernet to ITS Edge Cabinet.
The number of sensors and gateways is selected after analysing the zone classification, hazardous material, ambient temperature, installation locations, facility construction and planned reporting interval.
How it works
Sensors installed inside the hazardous area measure ambient temperature and humidity at regular intervals and transmit data wirelessly over LoRaWAN. Radio transmission reduces the need to route signal cables across the Ex-area boundary.
Two LoRaWAN gateways located outside the hazardous area receive the data. This arrangement supports wider coverage and reception redundancy. Both gateways forward data over Ethernet to the base version of ITS Edge Cabinet, where measurements are stored, presented and used by alarm rules.
| Location | Event | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Raw-material store | Humidity > 75% RH | 2 min ago |
| Mixing room B | Temperature > 26°C | 41 min ago |
| Point EX-07 | Returned to range | 2 h 10 min ago |

Where it works best
Chemical industry
Microclimate monitoring in classified production rooms, warehouses and process areas.
Petrochemicals and fuels
Measurements around tanks, pumping stations and other areas for which the correct device Ex marking has been selected.
Flammable-material stores
Temperature and humidity history with alarms when thresholds defined for stored materials are exceeded.
Paint and coating production
Monitoring conditions in mixing rooms, filling areas and raw-material stores requiring equipment suitable for explosive atmospheres.
Dust hazardous areas
Monitoring in areas with combustible dust after confirming that the marking and installation method are suitable for zone 21 or 22.
Distributed industrial installations
One view of parameters and point statuses from multiple halls, warehouses or plants.
Regular data instead of manual inspection rounds
- Reading available only during an inspection round
- No continuous view of changes between inspections
- Manual transcription of results into a spreadsheet or report
- Delayed notification of values outside the range
- Difficult comparison of multiple areas and installations
- Automatic measurements with a point identifier
- Temperature, humidity, trends and communication status in one view
- Event generated when a configured threshold is exceeded
- Measurement history available in ITS
- Local or central platform deployment model
ITS is the starting point, not the endpoint
Temperature, humidity, threshold events and device statuses can remain in the ITS dashboard or, depending on the deployment scope, be forwarded to reporting systems, databases and tools already used by the organisation.
The diagram shows available ITS platform integration paths. The specific protocol, data scope and exchange frequency are defined separately for each deployment.
Access to dashboards and configuration can be granted according to the user role.
Deployments requiring remote connectivity can use the built-in VPN server.
Measurements and alarms can remain in Edge Cabinet or be consolidated from multiple installations in ITS Cloud.
Describe the area and required measurement points.
For an initial discussion, the zone classification, temperature range, expected accuracy and reading frequency, and information about installation conditions are sufficient.
