Water meter readings using LoRaWAN
Water meters with integrated radio communication periodically transmit readings without requiring visits to individual premises. Data can remain in a local ITS Edge Cabinet or be sent centrally to ITS Cloud.
Four reasons to choose this solution
Readings without site visits
Meter readings are transmitted automatically over LoRaWAN, without manually recording every water meter.
Integrated communication
ElecTo SJ has an electronic register with a multi-protocol radio that supports LoRaWAN, among other technologies.
Scalable number of points
One architecture can cover multiple water meters and gateways selected for the radio range and facility layout.
Two data deployment models
Readings can be processed locally in Edge Cabinet or consolidated centrally in ITS Cloud.
What the solution includes
-
ElecTo SJ water meter with LoRaWAN communicationView in the store →
An electronic single-jet water meter with an integrated multi-protocol radio. Models are selected for the pipe diameter, water temperature and required radio configuration.
-
LoRaWAN gateway or gateways
They receive transmissions from water meters within range and forward the data to a local or central ITS instance.
-
ITS Edge Cabinet — base version (model 1)View model →
A local ITS instance for storing, aggregating and presenting data within a building or facility, including operation without public internet access.
-
ITS Cloud (model 2)Discover ITS →
A dedicated online instance that consolidates readings from multiple buildings or locations in one environment.
The number and placement of water meters and gateways are selected according to the number of measurement points, building construction, radio range and required method of data access.
How it works — two deployment models
The measurement layer remains the same. Only the ITS platform location and the method of forwarding data from the gateway change.
Water meters send readings over LoRaWAN to a gateway installed in the building. The gateway forwards them over Ethernet to the base version of ITS Edge Cabinet. Consumption history, reports and dashboards are available on site, and the system can operate without public internet access.
The gateway forwards data to ITS Cloud over an available IP connection, such as LTE or Ethernet, depending on the selected device and infrastructure. Readings from multiple buildings are delivered to one platform instance, providing the manager with a shared dashboard.
| Premises | Reading | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment 12 | 842,3 m³ | online |
| Apartment 13 | 615,8 m³ | online |
| Apartment 14 | — | no reading |
| Apartment 15 | 701,2 m³ | online |
Example data presentation showing total consumption, historical trend and the latest reading status of every water meter. The dashboard scope is tailored to the project.
Where it works best
Housing cooperatives and associations
Automatic readings from individual premises without arranging every meter reader visit.
Property managers
Shared visibility of consumption and point status across one or multiple buildings.
Water utilities
Remote collection of readings from distributed measurement points.
Hotels and accommodation facilities
Water consumption monitoring in selected premises, zones or buildings.
Campuses and industrial sites
Consolidation of readings from multiple buildings within one complex.
Rental buildings
Regular meter readings without manually recording values in every unit.
Regular data instead of manual inspection rounds
- Meter reader visits and access to every unit
- Readings at long intervals
- Risk of errors during manual transcription
- No current information between inspection rounds
- Difficult consolidation of multiple buildings
- Periodic transmission of readings over LoRaWAN
- Data history available in ITS
- Digital values without manual transcription
- Latest reading status for every point
- Local or central platform deployment model
ITS is the starting point, not the endpoint
Readings can remain in the ITS dashboard or, depending on the deployment scope, be forwarded to reporting systems, databases and tools already used by the organisation.
The diagram shows available ITS platform integration paths. The specific protocol, data scope and exchange frequency are defined separately for each deployment.
Access to dashboards and configuration can be granted according to the user role.
Deployments requiring remote connectivity can use the built-in VPN server.
Data can remain in Edge Cabinet or be consolidated from multiple facilities in ITS Cloud.
Describe the building or network of locations.
For an initial discussion, an approximate number of water meters and information about whether the data should remain local or be available centrally are sufficient.
